Despite ferries leaving here regularly for the Inner Hebrides many believe a stay in Oban still offers the best view of the local seascapes. Steeped in tiers clinging to the verdant hills around its bay, the town's beautiful location has made it one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region - its population more than doubling from 12,000 to 25,000 in peak seasons. The skyline is dominated by McCaig's Tower, a building based on the Colosseum in Rome, which features a public garden in its 'arena'. From here you can see the islands of Lismore, Mull and Kerrera, as well as the Cathedral of St Columba and pretty much everywhere else in town! The 18th-century chimney of Oban Distillery is particularly noticeable. Since Victorian times it's earned a reputation for producing some of the country's best malt liquor, and today both tours and tastings can be taken advantage of. A stroll through Oban's stunning surroundings is another recommended experience. Head north two miles and you'll come out onto a beautiful sandy beach in Ganavan Bay, overlooked by the ruins of Dunollie Castle in the nearby hills. The Scottish Sealife Sanctuary in neighbouring Barcaldine rescues injured seals as well as displaying an array of local marine life. It can be reached via a scenic coastal drive along the A85 and A828 roads.
