Located in the heart of the West Country we have the ideal base from which you can explore the many delights that this area has to offer. Our magnificent establishment was originally a Norman fortress and has been welcoming visitors to the area since the twelfth century.
As you approach our superb building it is hard not to be impressed by the magnificence of the ivy covered facade and the grandeur of the building. As you would expect with a building that has stood on this spot since the 12th century, it is steeped in history and has seen it share of drama, bloodshed and romance. Originally built as a fortress by the Normans almost a thousand years ago it has a rich history, in 1685 the Duke of Monmouth's officers were heard "roystering at the Castle Inn" before their defeat by the forces of King James II at Sedgemoor. A few years later the famous Judge Jeffreys held his 'Bloody Assize' in the Great Hall of the Castle.
Today the conflict and bloodshed is long gone, instead you will find luxurious surroundings, attentive yet unobtrusive service from dedicated and professional staff and a peaceful, tranquil ambiance that is perfect for a relaxing weekend break, or a holiday spent exploring the surrounding area with its many attractions. We have 44 superbly well proportioned and supremely comfortable rooms that have everything required for luxurious stay, each room having all of the facilities that you would expect to find in an establishment of this quality.
Our award winning restaurant uses only the finest local produce to create the exquisite menus for which it has become famous, served in the splendour and elegance of our atmospheric dinning room. To complete your meal to perfection, select a bottle of fine wine from our cellar stocked with wines from around the world.
