Our friendly, warm and welcoming establishment is internationally renown as one of the finest examples of Jacobean architecture with a magnificent medieval heritage; it is also famous for the warmth of welcome, excellent accommodation and friendly, personal service that all of our guests receive during their stay. The oldest parts of the building, including the world famous and much photographed timber facade, was built in 1619 by Rees Jones. He was a successful attorney in the town who had frequently appeared before the 'Council of the Marches', which from 1536 until 1689 was situated in the town in effect making it the capital of Wales. Although it has always provided shelter and food for travellers, it was not until 1863 that it was officially known as a hotel and since that time it has expanded, by taking over the properties on either side.
Now it has 40 spaciously well proportioned single, twin and double rooms, including four with stately four poster beds, one with a jacuzzi and two family rooms.
