This splendid coaching house dates back to 1647 and is set in the midst of the rolling Malborough Downs, on the Ridgeway Path - Europe's oldest highway. We pride ourselves on being a small but comfortable and well equipped establishment that offers its guests a high standard of accommodation, food and service.
The unusual name comes from the fact that the original well, from which the coaching house took its water, can still be seen in the floor of the restaurant; over 90ft deep, it is now safely covered with bullet-proof glass, enabling you to stand on it and look down into this fascinating original feature.
We have six purpose built rooms, three twin, two double and one family room that are spacious and airy, with comfortable beds, furniture and tasteful decoration. All of our rooms are en-suite, with TV, tea/coffee making and telephone.
In the cosy Well Restaurant the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, with paintings from local a artist on the walls, you can sit enjoy the eclectic menu that offers a variety of superb meals, with 'Chef's Specials' sometimes available. It is the house policy to only stock a small range of wines on a permanent basis, but there is always a varied stock of guest wines, some from lesser known vineyards but all worth sampling, for you to try.
In the bar area you will not find a pool table, jukebox or gaming machine, but you may be invited to a game of darts or cards by one of the locals. You may choose to select a meal from the excellent bar menu that serves the ever popular ham and eggs and ploughman's lunches, as well as other simple but tasty food.
The historic city of Bath, Avebury and Stonehenge are just some of the places of interest that are within easy driving distance. If you would like a round or two of golf, there are some excellent golf courses near-by.
