Hotels County Durham England Cheap County Durham Hotels

With expansive mountains and moorlands to the west and populous towns and cities to the east, County Durham is a land of choice and contrast. While the countryside is sparsely populated, there is no shortage of attractions, and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty abound. The county encompasses much of the mountainous North Pennines, the Durham Dales (with their many nature reserves), and the charming Weardale and Teesdale valleys. The 5,000-acre Hamsterley Forest is one of the biggest areas of woodland in the north of England, and is one of many parks and conservation areas that make for a great day outdoors. The county is also home to Britain's tallest waterfall, High Force, which, at 70 feet, becomes even more spectacular in the rainy seasons. Nearby, close to the small town of Staindrop, is Raby Castle. A 14th-century construction, it's backed by a vast lake and populated by deer herds. Elsewhere, the Bowes Museum at Barnard Castle has a fine collection of artwork, including paintings by Goya and El Greco; whereas the Beamish Open Air Museum re-creates an early 1900's village complete with a mine, farm and shops (as well as inhabitants in period costume). This is not the only settlement still lined with history, however. Built on a rocky peninsula defined by the River Wear, the city of Durham is one of the most beautiful you could hope to find. Its giant hilltop cathedral is instantly recognisable, but there are many other sights you can't leave without witnessing. Darlington was pivotal in another section of Britain's past - rail travel. Home to the first ever railway line, you can find out all about its involvement in the industry via the fascinating Railway Centre and Museum.
