Like so many great British cities, Gloucester is a destination crowned by
its cathedral. This particular centrepiece was the burial place of King
Edward II and thusly became a popular pilgrimage site in the 1300s. Some
generous donations enabled the construction of a magnificent Gothic exterior
(which you may recognise from its moonlighting role as Hogwarts in the first
two Harry Potter films). The Beatrix Potter Exhibition, in the proximate
College Court, is another favourite with the kids. The building was used as
a base by the author at the start of the 20th century when illustrating the
story The Tailor of Gloucester. Elsewhere in the city, religious
architecture remains prominent throughout, with churches proving both
numerous and impressive, hence the old phrase "as sure as God's in
Gloucester". A proud history of trade also exists here, particularly at the
city's port, which is Britain's most inland. Since their industrial heyday,
the Gloucester Docks have been completely transformed and now serve as a
museum complex. The National Waterways Museum, housed in a listed Victorian
warehouse, is the flagship attraction, telling the story of the nation's
canals via exhibits housed on both land and water. Also popular is the
Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum: a history of the county's famous
regiment, which fought against Napoleon, at Dunkirk and served Queen and
country as far afield as North America and Korea.
