Often mistaken for a new town, Basingstoke's 20th-century development belies an ancient settlement with several historical places of interest. Of particular importance are the ruins of Basing House, which was England's largest Tudor residence before Cromwell's armies razed it in 1645. Back in the town proper, the central Churchill Way is home to the majority of contemporary concrete enlargements. Most prominent is Festival Place, a large shopping centre housing 165 stores, a 10-screen cinema, the Liquid Nightclub, a sports centre, and even the town library.
