Scotland's first ever ski resort has provided a convenient base for winter sports ever since the Highland Railway came here in the 1800s. Situated just 9 miles from Britain's most northerly ski slopes, it runs regular bus and train services to the tops of the 28 runs on the peaks of the Cairngorms. This is only part of the reason why people choose to come to Aviemore, however, and there're many other highlights close at hand. Glenmore Forest Park, shadows the village from the east, and contains pockets of the ancient Caledonian Pinewood, the once immense woodland that covered so much of the Highlands. Just a little further is the Rothiemurchus Estate, where highland cattle and mountain goats are common sights along the numerous guided walks. Ospreys thrive in the Loch Garten Nature Reserve in Abernethy Forest, and you can even meet Britain's only herd of reindeer at the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre, which again is just a few miles from the village. Although it's home to just 2,400 people, Aviemore is nevertheless the largest settlement in the Cairngorm region, and its range of shops, including a supermarket and various outdoor-wear stores, will make sure you're not left wanting for supplies of any kind.
