Known locally simply as The Island, it is often described as England in Miniature thanks to the diverse landscape it encompasses in just 147 square miles. The west is largely open countryside, much of it an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (over half the Isle is designated as such) that boasts the stunning white cliffs of the Tennyson Heritage Coast, the multi-coloured sands of Alum Bay and arguably The Island's most photographed sight, the weathered chalk rock of The Needles. The rest of the Isle is home to the classic seaside resort towns, notably Shanklin and Sandown, and Cowes, its largest port and the starting-point for the world's oldest regular regatta, the famous Cowes Week, which has been held every August (except during the World Wars) since 1826. The Island's most popular manmade attraction is the stately Osborne House, the favoured coastal retreat of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Built in the middle of the 19th century, the house is furnished much as the pair left it and is dotted with family mementoes. Its Italianate gardens were co-designed by Albert. Their sub-tropical species, walled fruit garden, Renaissance-style statues and vistas of the sea are worth the price of admission alone.
