Sandown's position, occupying the northern half of the Isle of Wight's longest stretch of sandy beach, has long made it a favourite for those seeking the traditional seaside holiday. As with many of our coastal destinations, Sandown was popularised by the Victorians: It was they who laid out the town's broad seafront promenades, built its fine town and country villas, landscaped its delightful parks and gardens, and, in 1879, constructed its amusement-packed pier, which, unlike those of many an Island resort, still stands today. The pier of the 21st century is still very much a focus point in town, and now features a ten-pin bowling alley, adventure golf and a magic island alongside the classic arcades. Also to be found on the seafront is the Isle of Wight Zoo, an award-winning family exhibit that's home to the country's largest collection of tigers. A little further up the coast is Dinosaur Isle, Britain's first-purpose built dinosaur museum, housed in a stunning pterosaur-shaped building. As well as the giant dioramas and animatronic models, there's an extensive archive of fossils, including those of the Neovenator, a large, carnivorous beast that was first discovered in 1978 right here on the Isle of Wight. Just north of town is the beautiful landscape of Culver Down, a sprawling chalk downland and the provider of some exquisite cross-Channel views.
