Another prize flower in the Garden of England; Tonbridge is both rich in
history and vibrant in spirit. Decorated with flowers and hop plants it's a
beautiful place to explore and to experience. It features some exquisite
examples of English heritage, such as Tonbridge Castle, with one of the
finest Motte-and-Bailey gatehouses in existence. Along with the wonderfully
maintained structure and sumptuous grounds, you can take an informative and
fun audio tour through the castle. Once inside you'll encounter life-sized
models as well as the sights and sounds of 13th century life, which will
transport you back in time! Penhurst Place and Gardens are a classic example
of what attracts so many visitors to the county. Grand, yet reserved, the
property dates back to the 1300's and its tranquil gardens and excellent toy
museum are a joy to behold. A sure-fire winner for all the family has to be
The Hop Farm Country Park. It features an animal farm and pet corner, bouncy
castle, a military vehicle display, an award-winning museum, and Shire horse
stables, to name but a few! If you'd rather relax on the greens then Poult
Wood Golf Centre is the place to be. As well as the 18 and 9-hole courses,
you'll find squash courts on hand too, in case you feel like a change of
pace. Served by its own railway station and linked with easy road access via
the A21 and A26 from both north and south, Tonbridge is as simple to get to

The beautiful town of Tonbridge holds many attractions of interest for all ages and tastes. It's been a small market town since the mid-thirteenth century when the Earl of Gloucester first granted the right to hold the market originally in the high street, in 1856. Its history starts well before the market though. When William the conqueror invaded England during the Norman conquests in 1066, a nobleman named Richard Fitzgilbert (who was one of Williams most loyal servants) was given the land of Tonbridge and built a magnificent wooden castle. This was destroyed by fire following an uprising twenty years later and a new castle, Tonbridge Castle, was built in its place. Later in the 13th century a gatehouse was built defining the castle as one of the most impressive in England.
