Royal Tunbridge Wells has been a popular destination ever since the
discovery of its Chalybeate Spring in 1606. This attracted the Georgian
upper classes in their droves and they subsequently turned the town into one
of the most fashionable places in the country. This is still evident today
and nowhere more so than in The Pantiles, an 18th century colonnaded walkway
shadowed by lime trees, now full of cafes and delightful specialist and
antique shops. The Victorians were the next to leave their affluent mark on
The Wells, constructing grand houses and extravagant high street facades.
The shopping area Chapel Place was one of the places to benefit, and is now
lined with a range of designer clothes, jewellery and gift stores. It's not
the only place in town for a top dose of retail therapy however; check out
the elaborate Great Hall Shopping Arcade and the 100-store Westfield. Some
of the best eateries in the southeast can also be found here. You'll be able
to pick and choose between classy restaurants, Michelin Star dining and, of
course, traditional English pubs. The town has the added distinction of
being at the heart of an area which has the most concentrated collection of
castles, stately homes and gardens open to the public, in the whole country.
These include the historic Bayham Old Abbey; and the beautiful Groombridge
Place, Gardens and the Enchanted Forest.
