This little town in the rural county of Rutland is one of England's best kept secrets for relaxing breaks in the countryside. This stunningly designed building with its richly carved decoration signalled a new era of architecture in England and is beautifully set amongst its immaculately maintained gardens, where green-tailed pheasants roam majestically. If you still haven't had your share of history then there are various museums on hand such as the Normanton Church Museum which lies on a promontory that jets out into the epic lake of Rutland Water. The town is accessible via the A606 from the North, South and East and off the M1 via the A4304 and A6003 from Westerly directions. If you're coming in by rail to nearby Oakham look out to see if you are travelling over the famous Welland Viaduct, one of the longest in the country with 82 arches stretching magnificently across the valley south of town.
