Hotels Isle of Lewis Cheap Accommodation in Isle of Lewis Hotels GuideLewis, combined with the adjoining Harris Isles, forms both the largest and
the northernmost landmass in the Hebrides. Although not technically an
island, it still maintains separations from its neighbours in both language
(different variants of Gaelic) and elevation (rolling hills to Harris'
mountains). The erratic coastline offers more contrasts, alternating between
deep-sea lochs; miles of white sandy beaches; and prehistoric peat moors,
which have provided residents with fuel for thousands of years. Inland, over
a hundred lochans populate the valleys, overseen by the island's
eye-catching (but not quite so numerous) ancient monoliths. The most
striking and famous of these are the 4,000-year-old Standing Stones of
Callanish, located on a western foreland. Many legends have speculated on
their origin, including a local tradition that states the stones were once
giants petrified by Saint Kieran, after refusing to accept Christianity.
Close by are both the Black House Museum, an outdoor recreation of the old
crofting lifestyle; and the remains of Dun Carloway, a tower of Pictish
origins and one of the best preserved brochs in the world. Stornoway, on
the opposite coast is the Isles' only burgh and accounts for 8,000 of the
22,000 population. It's also home to the neo-gothic Lews Castle; a bustling
harbour; and a dollhouse-like seafront, which makes it as scenic as it is
practical. If want to find where to stay on the Isle of Lewis this is the place to book your hotel
