Hotels Egham England Cheap Egham Hotels GuideThis charming Surrey town is often remembered as the place where one of the most important events in British history took place - the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215. A memorial to this landmark stands in Runnymede Meadow, a beautiful section of land which borders the Thames and is visited by thousands every year thanks to its involving atmosphere, including attractions for young and old, picnic areas and great fishing locations. A statue to King John, the derided man who grudgingly signed the agreement can be found at Egham Museum and across town coats of arms have been inscribed into the pavements. Perhaps the most spectacular construction however lies on the outskirts of town - Royal Holloway College is a truly magnificent structure built in 1879, it measures 550 by 376 feet and surrounds two large courtyards. The Founder's Building there is always open to visitors and features a chapel, library and a gallery housing paintings by some of the Victorian era's most famous artists such as: Maclise, Fildes, Holl, Landseer and Millais. Another great aspect to this town is its location, its only a short distance from the immense Windsor Great Park and 20 miles east of Central London with direct trains running to and from Waterloo station. Offering great access to the Surrey countryside as well, it's a great location for exploring from as well as indulging in its own rich history.
