Today, Warwickshire is a hairpin-shaped land, looping around Coventry and
Birmingham, which were transplanted from here to the West Midlands in 1974.
What remains is a diverse selection classical towns and cities: places like
Royal Leamington Spa, Rugby, the capital Warwick (plus its famous castle),
and William Shakespeare's birthplace of Stratford-upon-Avon. These, and all
other major settlements, are largely confined to the middle of the county,
but the sparsely populated regions in the north and south are equally as
attractive. They include places such as the Forest of Arden (the setting for
As You Like It), the rolling hills of the Burton Dassett Country Park in the
south east, and some prime parts of the Cotswolds as well. Travelling around
this scenery is made all the more pleasurable by the frequent old country
houses that dot the landscape. Ragley Hall, near Alcester, regarded as one
of the great English estates, and Coombe Abbey (an atmospheric monastery and
gardens heralding from the 12th century), are just two to look out for. A
special mention also has to go to Lunt Fort, just outside of Coventry. A
complete reconstruction of the Roman stronghold that once stood here, it
played a key part in the Empire and today stages entertaining battle
