It was burned down in 1113 and rebuilt in stone by the Viceroy Bishop Roger at great expense. Turbulent times came ahead when Cromwell tried to claim the castle for the King and when no surrender was given, battle commenced and the keep where the gun powder was stored was hit by a shell and surrender was there only choice. Later to be demolished by the King it has been rebuilt and is still undergoing more renovation to this day.
