Hotels Cambridge England Cheap Cambridge Hotels GuideHome to one of the greatest universities in the world, not to mention some of the most stunning churches, Cambridge's streets read like a history book of British architecture. This environment-conscious town, which encourages the use of bicycles and public transport, has many of its attractions conveniently located at the heart of its traffic-free town centre - leaving them to be explored and enjoyed practically as they were in medieval times, before the roars of car engines became so prevalent. So what is there to see here? Well, you can visit any one of the 31 assorted colleges, such as King's College, which was designed by Henry VIII to dominate the local skyline; take a stroll along the grassy Backs by the side of the River Cam; or hire a traditional punt boat and drift slowly and peacefully along its waters! If the boat is your choice, you'll find it a great way to spot some of the town's timeless bridges that link college to college. Be careful however, as many of these (i.e. the angelic Bridge of Sighs) stand only a few feet above the surface and require you to duck as you sail underneath! Away from the town centre, the attractions do not thin out. The 12th-century Church of the Holy Sepulchre (or simply the Round Church, due to the shape of its nave) is one of only a handful of such buildings in Britain today, and was based on its famous Jerusalem namesake. Two important museums are the Sedgwick, with its extensive collection of pre-historic artefacts; and the Fitzwilliam Museum (one of the nation's oldest), which includes paintings by Monet, Picasso and Renoir, as well as both original manuscripts of The Canterbury Tales and Handel's compositions.
