Arbroath, the county's largest town is located roughly midway and is home to the sandstone Arbroath Abbey, the site of the signing of Scottish Independence in the 14th century. The huge Montrose Basin to the north is a priceless nature reserve, complimenting Glen Clova's collection of roe deer and red squirrels with a multitude of pink-footed geese and common redshanks. The best of the area's many golf courses are also to be found by the shoreline, including Carnoustie, a past and future host of the Open Championship.
