Countryside, coastline and culture are all packed into the small area of Cleveland. Not to be confused with the Tees-Valley district (which encompasses Darlington), Cleveland is now, technically no longer a county, due to its disbandment in 1996. However, the name is still in common use, and locals will have no trouble understanding where you mean. What is for sure, is that there's plenty to see and do here, both in and out of doors. You can roam the vast natural moorland of Captain Cook Country in the spirit of Middlesbrough's famous explorer, enjoy the sandy beaches at Redcar and Marske-by-the-Sea, or get a feel for the county's industrial past down the old ironstone mines (at the award-winning museum at Skinningrove). In Hartlepool, you'll find the oldest ship still afloat in the UK, the HMS Trincomalee, docked at the aptly named Historic Quay. Middlesbrough is home to the 18th-century Palladian mansion Ormesby Hall, as well as some excellent museums; and the area's largest town, Stockton-on-Tees, has a whole host of modern day attractions, ranging from Billingham Art Gallery to Butterfly World. New developments, such as the 250,000-tree Cowpen Bewley Woodland Park, help make the area one that's constantly changing, growing and diversifying - meaning a fresh visit always introduces you to something new and exciting!
