coastal county of two rivers and two cities, it's home to the futuristic
Sage concert hall, Baltic Contemporary Art Gallery, National Glass Museum,
the Life Science Centre, the Angel of the North, the Metro Shopping Mall,
the Stadium of Light and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge. As well as the
modern sights, the area's 335 square miles also pack in a fair number of
historical treats. These include the Arbeia Roman Fort and Museum at South
Shields, which features excavated remains and reconstructions from the most
easterly fort of Hadrian's Wall. In fact, the region is well known for its
collection of museums, with others of note being the Discovery and the Laing
Art Gallery in Newcastle, and the contemporary Museum and Winter Gardens in
Sunderland. The latter features paintings of the (then) town by L.S. Lowry,
who loved to holiday here. This may have had something to do with the
excellent beaches this particular strip of the north east has to offer of
course. Seaburn Beach in particular is wide with golden sands, and its
promenade is lined with traditional seaside arcades, fish and chip shops and
a fairground. Wherever you're heading during your stay in Tyne and Wear, the
Metro will help you get there. Many stops in all major towns (as well as at
Newcastle Airport) make travelling the area easy, especially with some
