If you really want to get away from it all, you can't do any better than Northumberland. As well as being one of England's largest counties, it's also the least densely populated, which goes a long way to explaining its growing reputation as an escapist's paradise. Ramparts still remain at Berwick-upon-Tweed, which itself changed hands no less than 14 times in the space of just 300 years. Alnwick's past has also worked to its advantage, and its stunning castle (known as The Windsor of the North), has earned it a reputation as the most picturesque market town in all of Northumberland. Many islands exist off the north east coast, but the most famous is the mystical settlement of Lindisfarne, aka Holy Island. Reachable twice a day via a neck of narrow land, it's a tiny island completely dominated by a fairytale castle - a magnificent sight from any distance. If you're looking for a more active day out, then the county is also home to the largest man-made lake in Europe, Kielder Water. Living in harmony with an enormous surrounding forest, it's perfect for a variety of watersports, including sailing, canoeing, windsurfing, water-skiing and fishing.
