Comprising of roughly one quarter of the total area of Wales, Powys is easily the country's biggest principal area (as well as being the most sparsely populated). Incorporating the bulk of the Brecon Beacons, it's home to both the Berwyn and Black mountain ranges, as well as Elan Valley and the Fforest Fawr (Great Forest) - making it the ideal place for exploring the all-encompassing National Park. As you might expect, the views are breathtaking. Miles of moors and woodland rise and fall over peaks reaching nearly 3,000 feet, while prehistoric monuments, castles, ancient hill forts, sleepy villages and Victorian spa towns sprinkle the remainder of the landscape. As well as walking, cycling and pony-trekking across the hills, you can indulge in canoeing and whitewater rafting down three of Wales's most prominent rivers - the Usk, Wye and the Severn. Towns are relatively small (with populations generally ranging from 1,000 to 5,000), but their individual charms are their main assets. Hay-on-Wye is known for its millions of second-hand books and prestigious Festival of Literature, county headquarters Llandrindod Wells has preserved its Victorian spa heritage admirably and Knighton is the only original settlement on the historic Offa's Dyke. In a land of such majesty, however, it's no surprise that myths and legends are almost as prevalent as historical fact. Radnor Forest, for example, is said to be the home of the country's last dragon; and four churches (which still stand today) were built on each of the forest's corners to prevent it from escaping. Even more treasures lay buried below the Powys surface. The largest sub-terranean cave systems in Northern Europe are here and tours are on hand to explain their 300 million year old past.
