Denbighshire is Wales's north east. Formally part of the large multi county incorperation of Clwyd, it became a county of its own in 1996. The area around here is commonly referred to as the North Wales Borderlands, this is an area of quintessential Welsh peaks, forests, fields, beaches and towns. Inland, hills and mountains dominate. The Clwydian Range (as well as being a designated AONB) is home to some 30-plus Iron Age hill forts - the finest collection of its kind in Europe. Even wilder is the Berwyn Range, home to waist-high heather on the slopes and rare species of falcons in the skies. Numerous rivers and lakes offer unsurpassable opportunities for whitewater canoeing, windsurfing or sailing (as well as great conditions for salmon and trout fishing). Providing a welcome respite to these vigorous outdoor activities are the bustling market towns of Corwen, Ruthin and Llangollen. The barges travelling across the aqueduct high above Llangollen, make it especially unusual, and its 13th-century Castell Dinas Bran, aka Crow Castle (said to be the resting place of the Holy Grail), give it an individual air of mysticism. On the coast are the traditional seaside towns of Prestatyn and Rhyl. With 7 miles of sandy beaches between them, as well as some traditional seaside attractions, they make for an entirely different type of holiday just a few miles north of the mountains!
