conflicts, and thusly, in 1690, Fort William (named after William Prince of
Orange) was constructed. The West Highland Museum holds a number of
interesting artefacts from this and other eras, such as a collection of
ancient coins, assorted Jacobite relics and a secret portrait of Bonnie
Prince Charlie. Also well worth visiting are the ruins of Inverlochy Castle,
the forerunner to the fort, and the backdrop for the Battle of Inverlochy in
1645. The town is also the final stop on Scotland's oldest and most popular
long distance walking trail, The West Highland Way, which begins just north
of Glasgow. Anyone not up to taking on either that or the 4409 ft Ben Nevis
might want to explore the beautiful Glen Nevis instead, which begins at the
south side of town. Its wonderful expansive views are synonymous with the
romantic image of the Highlands and have been used as the backdrops for
films such as Braveheart and Rob Roy. If you need to stay
