Built to order in the 1800s, the neatly designed Victorian burgh of Kingussie makes for one of the Highland's most romantic resorts. The barracks were constructed in 1721 to help quell the Highland uprisings of the time, but after a number of attacks, were reduced to their current state 25 years later by Jacobite armies fleeing from Culloden. The resident Highland Folk Museum has a national reputation. It's a living, breathing recreation of an old farming community, which, complete with demonstrations and activities, gives a first rate impression of what it was like to be a true Highlander.
