Hotels Buckingham England Cheap Buckingham Hotels Guide

Surrounded by an array of country houses and gardens, this small market town is a sure-fire hit with lovers of both history and precious scenery. Winslow Hall, Claydon House and Stowe Park are all nearby. Stowe, the most important and ambitious landscaped garden in England, is of particular interest. First laid out in the 1680s, it was enlarged and improved over the next century by some of the leading architects and designers of the time. Now, its features range from Greek and Gothic temples to ornamental bridges over artificial lakes. Buckingham was made a county town by Alfred the Great in 888, but this was later rescinded by Henry VIII in the 16th century. A hundred years later, Lord Cobham focused his attention on winning back the title by commissioning some impressive buildings. His attempts were unsuccessful, but the town is all the better for his efforts! Most notable constructions of that era include the Old Gaol, an impressive castle-like structure, and the Town Hall, built to rival that of new county capital Aylesbury. Standing at either end of the market, both are hard to miss, as is the hilltop parish church of St Peter and St Paul, which overlooks the Great Ouse from the heart of town. Buckingham is easy to reach via the A422 from Banbury and the A421 Milton Keynes, where frequent buses also depart from.
