Hotels Winchester England Cheap Winchester Hotels Guide

Headquarters of the ancient kingdom of Wessex, Winchester was the seat of the Anglo-Saxon kings until the Norman Conquest, and the capital of England during the 10th and early 11th centuries. The city's past glory is testified to by a number of attractions, the most popular of which is the Great Hall, the last surviving piece of William the Conqueror's Winchester Castle. Today, The Hall is best known for a 13th-century version of King Arthur's legendary Round Table, the top of which, inscribed with the names of Arthur and his 24 knights, has hung here for 600 years. Winchester Cathedral, one of England's largest ecclesiastical buildings, is easily the most spectacular landmark in town. Begun in 1079 in the Romanesque style, it retains many of its Norman features despite undergoing continual modifications until the early 16th century. Many of its visitors come to see the tomb of Jane Austen, who is buried in the north aisle of the immense Perpendicular nave, the highlight of the structure. The town centre, which still obeys Alfred the Great's original Anglo-Saxon street plan, houses an assortment of modern shops; the City and Westgate museums; and the 13th-century Pilgrims' Hall, so called because it marks the start of The Pilgrims' Way, which runs from here to Canterbury. St Cross Hospital, founded by Henri du Blois, is England's oldest almshouse, and still offers dole to travellers 900 years after its construction. It can be found amidst tranquil gardens in the city's southern outskirts. When you are looking for where to stay in Winchester, this is the place to book your hotel room.
