Once a crucial naval port, Portsmouth, England's only island city, now hoards some of the great British warships of old. Most famous is the HMS Victory, the flagship on which Admiral Nelson died in the Battle of Trafalgar, which is moored in a dry dock in Portsmouth Harbour. Built between 1759-1765, it's the oldest commissioned warship extant in the world, and has been fully restored to its former glory. The extensive Portsmouth Historic Dockyard also houses the remains of the Mary Rose, the favourite of Henry VIII, which capsized in the Solent in 1545 en route to engaging the French. Its hull, which has to be kept perpetually wet, is stored in its own museum along with 1,200 other relics found when the ship was recovered in 1982. Also on the site are the Royal Naval Museum, which deals in marine history from the 16th century to the Falklands War; Action Stations, an interactive battle simulator; and last, but not least, Queen Victoria's famous battleship, the HMS Warrior 1860. Away from the docks, Southsea, the city's own beach-lined resort area, is home to the excellent D-Day Museum. Here, pride of place is given to Britain's answer to the Bayeux Tapestry, the Overlord Embroidery, a 33-foot-long commemoration of the D-Day invasion of occupied France. The 3rd-century Portchester Castle, which overlooks the harbour from the north and pre-dates its urban environs by roughly 1,000 years, is one of the most complete examples of surviving Roman fortifications in northern Europe.
