Like Sandown, its sister resort, Shanklin's popularity stretches back well into the 19th century. Its natural attributes - wide, sandy beaches; warm climes; and even a local spring - made it an instant hit with the touristically minded Victorians, who assured its place on the map (and in the guidebooks) with a rail link from Ryde in 1864. Although just down the road from Sandown, it's Shanklin, at the southern end of Sandown Bay, which holds the British annual sunshine record. Aside from frequenting the two ample beaches, which, due to both their length and breadth, hardly ever get crowded despite high numbers of patrons, there's plenty to do in and around town. The best-known natural site is Shanklin Chine, a deep, wooded gorge and waterfall set in a cliff fissure. Due to its unique microclimate provided by its steep, sheltering cliffs, the gorge is home to a somewhat exotic catalogue of flora and fauna, including Island-bred chipmunks and cockatiels. Above the Chine is the Old Village, an exceedingly quaint district characterised by diminutive thatched cottages, restaurants, and craft and gift shops. Shanklin's traditional seaside entertainment - amusement arcades, crazy golf, children's play areas, cafes etc. - can be found on the esplanade, in the northern half of the seafront. Its parks and gardens are also well worth a look. Rylstone Gardens, which runs alongside the Chine, has previously been voted the most picturesque in the south of England.
