A Norman cathedral, ancient Roman walls and grand Victorian shop fronts -
every civilisation that's settled in Chester has left a mark that remains to

pride in incorporating its past into current amenities. Nowhere is this more
evident than on the unique streets known as the Chester Rows. Here, the two
tier black and white buildings (some originating from the 13th century) make
a perfect, picturesque setting for high street stores, which sit atop one
another like an outdoor medieval mall. Adding weight to the spectacle is a
genuine town crier, who, just as thousands of years prior, calls the hour
and informs citizens of the latest town news. Also in the area is the
wrought-iron Eastgate Clocktower, erected in 1897 for Queen Victoria's
Diamond Jubilee. It's said to be the country's second most photographed
chronometer, just after Big Ben in London! The magnificent cathedral,
situated on a holy site for over 1,000 years, is surrounded on two sides by
the original Roman walls that first protected the settlement known as Deva.
The other major relic to survive from the era is the amphitheatre, the
largest ever constructed in Britain. Once capable of seating 7,000, its
free-to-enter ruins now allow an infinite number to see the spot where
military demonstrations and bloody gladiator battles took place. The old
world doesn't come at the expense of the new however, and Chester has the
largest concentration of pubs, clubs and restaurants in the region - giving
the city a modern makeover every time the sun goes down.
